Husband helps mother instead of pregnant wife, tells her “my mom comes before you

A pregnant woman has taken to Reddit to seek advice about a stressful situation involving her husband, who evidently appears to be a bit of a momma’s boy.

She shared her experience during pregnancy and the concerning dynamics between her husband and his clingy mother.

The woman explained that she had been married to her husband for six months and was currently six months pregnant. She said that she was concerned about her husband’s exceptionally close relationship with his mother, describing him as a “momma’s boy” who spent an excessive amount of time with her. Her distress reached a tipping point, leading her to seek guidance on Reddit.

In her plea for advice, the woman described how she had approached her husband when she was six months pregnant, asking that he make an effort to be more present and support her in preparation for their unborn child.

To her astonishment, her husband responded by saying: “You know my mom comes before you,” saying that spending more time with her would eat into the time he spent with his mother. This deeply hurt the woman, but she swallowed her pride and managed her preparations for the child independently when he chose to spend time with his mother instead.

One incident that particularly upset the woman, however, was her anniversary. While she thought her husband was planning a surprise for her, he abruptly left for his mother’s house. When the woman contacted him to ask where he was, he revealed that he was with his mother.

Naturally, at this point, the woman became extremely frustrated, especially since she’d bought him a gift and cooked his favorite meal. She told her husband that it seemed as if he was in a relationship with his mother instead of her. Unsurprisingly, this started a pretty intense argument.

Couple having a disagreement at home

Later, the woman received text messages from both her husband and mother-in-law, criticizing her for her actions and telling her not to disrespect her mother-in-law. Frustrated, she turned to Reddit, wondering whether she was in the wrong for her reaction.

The responses she received from the Reddit community varied. Some reassured her that her expectations of her husband to prioritize her during her pregnancy were entirely reasonable. They criticized him for not being more supportive and encouraged her to communicate her feelings with her husband.

“[…] WTH [why the Hell] are you married to this man? How long did you know him before you married him? Surely he behaved the same way. As long as she is alive, YOU will NEVER ‘win’. Almost like they used a surrogate to have a baby. Weird,” one person wrote.

Additionally, many told her to just have a conversation with her husband to understand why he’s set on spending so much time with his mother. Though, the woman explained that when she did, her husband said that his mother held a significant place in his life, leading to further concerns about the situation.

It’s time to get a good divorce lawyer and look into getting primary custody cause I have a feeling he would try to take the baby away from you so him and his mom can raise the baby together,” another person commented.

In an update to her Reddit post, the woman said she realized that her mother-in-law had no intentions of changing her behavior. She thought about the possibility of divorce and ended up confronting her husband with the ultimatum to choose between her and his mother.

When the husband had this conversation, he became emotional and started crying, telling his wife that he would change. The woman also spoke with her mother-in-law, who told the woman that she would never win.

The woman then explained that if her mother-in-law continued with this behavior, she would limit how much access she had to her grandchild.
