In November 2009, the 26-year-old medical student, husband, and father entered Utah\u2019s infamous Nutty Putty Cave with friends and family members, expecting another adventurous day underground. Instead, he became trapped in a nightmare that would ultimately cost him his life and permanently change the caving world forever.<\/p>\n
John had always loved exploring tight cave systems and narrow underground passages. Nutty Putty Cave, located near Utah Lake, had long attracted thrill-seeking explorers because of its twisting tunnels and extremely confined spaces. But deep inside the cave system, John mistakenly entered an unmapped passage he believed was part of a familiar route.<\/p>\n
The tunnel narrowed into a tiny opening measuring roughly 10 inches high and 18 inches wide. As John pushed forward headfirst, gravity pulled him deeper until he became completely wedged upside down.<\/p>\n
