I resented my stay-at-home wife for having an easier life while I worked all day, until she told me what staying home had actually cost her.<\/p>\n
My wife Hannah has been a stay-at-home mom since our youngest, Owen, was born.<\/p>\n
We have three kids, eight, five, and two, and before Owen came along, Hannah worked full-time.<\/p>\n
When she stayed home, I understood it as a practical decision. Between daycare and everything that came with three young kids, it made sense to have one parent whose schedule could bend when the family needed it.<\/p>\n
I was the one whose career kept moving.<\/p>\n
I work in operations for a fairly large company. Most mornings I’m out the door before seven, and I’m rarely home before six.<\/p>\n
My days are meetings, deadlines, budgets, employees calling with problems, and a boss who somehow remembers what he needs from me five minutes before I’m supposed to leave.<\/p>\n
Somewhere along the way, I started resenting Hannah for being home while four people depended on my paycheck.<\/p>\n
I knew Hannah wasn’t doing nothing.<\/p>\n
She handled school drop-offs and pickups, stayed home with Owen, did the laundry, groceries, cooking, appointments, and school stuff because I couldn’t just leave work every time one of the kids needed something.<\/p>\n
But I still thought being home gave her a level of freedom she didn’t appreciate.<\/p>\n
She could make coffee in our kitchen, wear sweatpants, and sit on the couch while Owen played.<\/p>\n
If he napped, she had two hours in her own house.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I’d call, and she’d be at the mall.<\/p>\n
Another time she was at the park with Owen and another mom, drinking coffee while the kids played.<\/p>\n
I was sitting in a conference room eating vending-machine pretzels between meetings.<\/p>\n
Those little things built up.<\/p>\n
Another thing that bothered me was that Hannah complained about being constantly tired.<\/p>\n
I’d come home after being gone for 11 hours and hear, “You have no idea what kind of day I had.”<\/p>\n
And in my head I’d think, “Neither do you.”<\/p>\n
There are stressful moments with kids.<\/p>\n
Trust me, I know that.<\/p>\n
I have them on weekends too.<\/p>\n
They fight. Somebody spills something.<\/p>\n
But Hannah talked about it sometimes like she’d spent the day working construction.<\/p>\n
She’d say she never got a chance to sit down, but I’d see a coffee cup beside the couch.<\/p>\n
She’d say she had no time for herself, but I knew she texted her sister.<\/p>\n
She sometimes watched shows during nap time.<\/p>\n
She ordered groceries from her phone.<\/p>\n
She wasn’t scrubbing our clothes against a rock in a river.<\/p>\n
And yes, the house was usually clean, and dinner was usually made, but I’d always looked at that as part of staying home.<\/p>\n
What really got to me was when Hannah said she needed “an actual break” and asked me to take all three kids somewhere on Saturday.<\/p>\n
That annoyed me more than it should have.<\/p>\n
I told her I’d just worked five days and Saturday was my break too.<\/p>\n
She said weekends weren’t breaks for her because she still did the same job she did Monday through Friday.<\/p>\n
I didn’t say it, but I remember thinking, “What job? You’re their mother.”<\/p>\n
I took the kids to lunch.<\/p>\n
When we got home, Hannah looked more relaxed than I’d seen her in weeks, which honestly made me more resentful.<\/p>\n
The thing that finally pushed me over the edge was a picture Hannah sent while I was at work.<\/p>\n
Owen was asleep on her chest.<\/p>\n
The caption said, “Guess I’m stuck here :).”<\/p>\n
I was answering emails while eating lunch with one hand.<\/p>\n
It hit a nerve.<\/p>\n
Then one evening at dinner, she said she was exhausted because Owen had been difficult.<\/p>\n
I made some comment about how at least she’d gotten to lie down during his nap.<\/p>\n
She looked at me.<\/p>\n
“What does that mean?”<\/p>\n
I said it didn’t mean anything.<\/p>\n
“Sometimes I’m jealous of you.”<\/p>\n
“Jealous of me?”<\/p>\n
“You get to stay home.”<\/p>\n
“With three children.”<\/p>\n
“Two of them are in school most of the day.”<\/p>\n
“And the third one is two.”<\/p>\n
“I know how old our son is, Hannah.”<\/p>\n
I said, “I’m not saying you don’t do anything. I’m saying you have no idea what it’s like to get up every morning and go somewhere you don’t want to go because four people are depending on your paycheck.”<\/p>\n
“More than I do, yes.”<\/p>\n
“What exactly do you think my day looks like?”<\/p>\n
“School drop-off. Cleaning. Laundry. Lunch. Owen’s nap. The mall sometimes. The park. School pickup. Dinner.”<\/p>\n
“I’m not saying it’s a vacation,” I said. “But compared to my schedule? Yes. I think you have it easier.”<\/p>\n
She was quiet. Then she asked, “If you could trade places with me, would you?”<\/p>\n
“In a heartbeat.”<\/p>\n
She nodded. “Okay.”<\/p>\n
“Okay what?”<\/p>\n
Something about the way she said it made me stop eating. “Hannah, what does that mean?”<\/p>\n
She put her fork down. “I got a job.”<\/p>\n
I actually laughed. Not because I thought she was joking. It was almost relief. “Seriously? That’s great.”<\/p>\n
She looked surprised.<\/p>\n
I said, “I mean it. If you want to go back to work, go back. We’ll put Owen in daycare. We’ll figure it out.”<\/p>\n
“I already accepted.”<\/p>\n
“Even better.”<\/p>\n
Then she told me what they were paying her.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
She repeated it.<\/p>\n
It was more than I made.<\/p>\n
Not twice as much. Nothing ridiculous.<\/p>\n
But enough more that I immediately understood why she’d been staring at me.<\/p>\n
Then Hannah said, “So if one of us needs to stay home, financially it makes more sense for it to be you.”<\/p>\n
I stared at her.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
And suddenly I had a dozen reasons why I couldn’t.<\/p>\n
I said, “I didn’t know you could make that much.”<\/p>\n
“I used to.”<\/p>\n
“No, you didn’t.”<\/p>\n
“Yes, Mark. I did.”<\/p>\n
I started to argue, then stopped.<\/p>\n
Before Owen, Hannah had been a project manager for a medical equipment company. I knew she’d made good money.<\/p>\n
I just hadn’t remembered how good.<\/p>\n
How long I’d worked to get there.<\/p>\n
What stepping away would do to my career.<\/p>\n
Then something occurred to me.<\/p>\n
“If you could make this much, why did you stay home?”<\/p>\n
Her expression changed.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
“If you could make this much, why did we decide daycare didn’t make sense?”<\/p>\n
“What do you mean?”<\/p>\n
“We never decided I should stay home because daycare cost more than I made.”<\/p>\n
“That’s exactly what happened.”<\/p>\n
“No. That’s how you remember it.”<\/p>\n
She got up and left the room.<\/p>\n
When she came back, she had her laptop.<\/p>\n
