The bathtub appeared on a Tuesday.<\/p>\n
I opened my curtains at seven in the morning, looked across the lawn, and just stood there.<\/p>\n
There was an entire cast-iron bathtub sitting beside my fence.<\/p>\n
Not near the curb.<\/p>\n
Not halfway between my house and my neighbor’s.<\/p>\n
On my grass.<\/p>\n
“Aaron.”<\/p>\n
No answer.<\/p>\n
“Aaron, come here.”<\/p>\n
He wandered into the room carrying coffee.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
I pointed through the window.<\/p>\n
He stared.<\/p>\n
“No. It’s a decorative birdbath.”<\/p>\n
He looked at me.<\/p>\n
“Okay. You don’t have to be mean.”<\/p>\n
I put on shoes and walked straight next door.<\/p>\n

There had been contractors, lumber, dumpsters, tile deliveries, and the usual noise that comes with tearing half a house apart.<\/p>\n

I should probably tell you now that this was the first of several weekends Greg promised me.<\/p>\n
The bathtub stayed.<\/p>\n
Then black contractor bags appeared beside it.<\/p>\n
Then broken drywall. Wood trim. A toilet tank.<\/p>\n
One afternoon, I caught Greg near his driveway.<\/p>\n
“You said the weekend.”<\/p>\n
“The hauler canceled.”<\/p>\n
“And all the new stuff?”<\/p>\n
“I’m having everything taken together.”<\/p>\n
“When?”<\/p>\n
“Saturday.”<\/p>\n
The following Monday, Greg’s own yard looked perfect.<\/p>\n
Fresh mulch. Clean driveway. No debris.<\/p>\n
Mine looked like a renovation crew had been evicted from a hardware store.<\/p>\n
My name is Lisa. My husband Aaron and I have lived in that house for 11 years.<\/p>\n
Greg had been next door for five.<\/p>\n
We weren’t close friends, but we’d always gotten along.<\/p>\n
He borrowed tools.<\/p>\n
Normal neighbor stuff.<\/p>\n
Which is probably why I gave him more patience than I should have.<\/p>\n
Aaron stood with me one evening, looking at the junk.<\/p>\n
“We should just hire someone to remove it and send him the bill.”<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“Why not?”<\/p>\n
Aaron thought for a second.<\/p>\n
“Fair.”<\/p>\n
“And then we’ve paid to clean up his renovation.”<\/p>\n
“Also fair.”<\/p>\n
I kept texting Greg.<\/p>\n
Hey, when is the debris being removed?<\/p>\n
Soon.<\/p>\n
Then: “Waiting on the contractor.”<\/p>\n
Every answer bought him another few days.<\/p>\n
After three weeks, I came home and found an envelope from the city.<\/p>\n
I opened it at the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n
“NOTICE OF PROPERTY MAINTENANCE VIOLATION.”<\/p>\n
“Remove discarded construction materials and household fixtures from the exterior property within ten days or corrective action and\/or fines may follow.”<\/p>\n
I handed him the paper.<\/p>\n
He read it. Then he looked outside.<\/p>\n
“You’re kidding.”<\/p>\n
“Apparently Greg’s bathtub is now legally my bathtub.”<\/p>\n
The notice included photos.<\/p>\n
The bathtub. The bags. The broken materials.<\/p>\n
All sitting clearly on our side.<\/p>\n
I understood why the city sent the notice.<\/p>\n
The mess was technically on our lawn.<\/p>\n
But I wasn’t about to pay a fine because Greg had decided my property was free storage.<\/p>\n
I carried the notice next door.<\/p>\n

I handed him the notice. “The city is threatening to fine us.”<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n
“It’s on your property, Lisa. Sounds like you need to clean it up.”<\/p>\n
I stared at him. “Your contractors put it there.”<\/p>\n
He shrugged again. “You can’t prove that.”<\/p>\n
That sentence changed the entire conversation.<\/p>\n
“Excuse me?”<\/p>\n
“I’ve been asking the crew to take things away. I can’t control where everything ends up.”<\/p>\n
“The bathtub wandered over by itself?”<\/p>\n
He opened his truck door.<\/p>\n
“I don’t have time for this.”<\/p>\n
“You promised to move it.”<\/p>\n
“I said I’d try.”<\/p>\n
He got in.<\/p>\n
Then he looked at me through the open window.<\/p>\n
“Just clean it up. You’re making this way too complicated.”<\/p>\n
He drove away.<\/p>\n
