He Saved His Wife in the Cr*sh—What Happened Weeks Later Left Everyone in Awe

Hero Deputy Pushes Wife to Safety in Life-Changing Crash
On August 1, a devastating accident changed the lives of two off-duty deputies from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office—Lucas and Nicole Shoffner. The couple was hit by a vehicle while trying to fix a dirt bike on the side of the road, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Collision Involving Fellow Deputy
The driver was identified as 31-year-old Raymond Surber, a deputy with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office. He was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado when the cr*sh happened around 11:17 p.m.

A Split-Second Heroic Act
Despite the chaos, Lucas Shoffner managed to save his wife. He pushed Nicole out of the vehicle’s path, taking the full force of the impact himself. Former Loudon County sergeant Matt Fagiana confirmed the heroic act and praised Lucas’s character, calling him “kind, loyal, funny, and resilient.”

A Community Rallies Behind Them
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office shared heartfelt words on social media. They described Lucas as a dedicated officer who’s spent his career serving both country and community. His previous department, the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, also voiced support: “Lucas, everyone at LCSO is pulling for you!”

Lucas Battles Severe Injuries
Lucas Shoffner sustained critical head injuries and was placed in a medically induced c*ma in the Transplant ICU at UT Medical Center. Doctors have begun reducing the paralytic, though he remains fully sedated.

Nicole Shares an Emotional Update
After weeks of uncertainty, hope emerged. Nicole, who also suffered injuries and now uses a wheelchair, shared uplifting news on Instagram. “After 40 long days in the ICU, today we start our chapter of healing,” she wrote.

About the Driver
Raymond Surber, the driver in the incident, has served with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office since 2012. He received the Medal of Valor in 2015. The crash has deeply affected the law enforcement community, reminding everyone of the risks officers face—even off duty.

Final Thoughts
As Lucas begins his long road to recovery, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office continues asking for prayers. Their story is not just about tragedy—it’s a powerful testament to courage, love, and resilience in the face of the unexpected.
