Judge Frank Caprio Dies At 88, Shared Heartbreaking

Judge Frank Caprio Dies at 88

Frank Caprio, the widely admired American judge known for his kindness and compassion in court, passed away on Wednesday at age 88 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

His official Instagram confirmed he died “peacefully” and will be “remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.”

A Judge Who Led With Heart

Caprio became a household name through the TV show Caught in Providence, where his warm, understanding approach to justice touched millions.

He often handled minor cases like traffic tickets with empathy, opting for leniency or kind words instead of harsh penalties. His courtroom moments frequently went viral, earning him the nickname “America’s Nicest Judge.”

In 2021, the show earned a Daytime Emmy nomination, further cementing Caprio’s influence on public perceptions of justice.

Final Message and Legacy

Just hours before his death, Caprio shared a heartfelt video from his hospital bed:

“I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more. So I ask you again if it’s not too much that you can remember me in your prayers.”

He had reflected on his illness with dignity, telling CNA,

“My first reaction was disbelief. But then I thought: I have lived a life full of blessings. I’m not going to let this define my later years.”

A Life of Service

Caprio began practicing law in 1965 and served as a municipal judge in Providence, Rhode Island, from 1985 until his retirement in 2023. His book, Compassion in the Court, shared stories that showcased his deep empathy in the courtroom.

He is survived by his wife Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
