Climber Falls to Death While Scaling Yosemite’s El Capitan
Renowned 23-year-old Alaskan climber Balin Miller tragically fell to
his death while attempting to scale El Capitan in Yosemite National Park on October 1.
He had been live-streaming parts of his climb in the days before the accident.
Miller’s mother, Jeanine Girard-Moorman, confirmed his death, writing on Facebook:
“It is with a heavy heart I have to tell you my incredible son Balin Miller died during a climbing accident today.”
She added, “My heart is shattered in a million pieces… I love him so much.”
According to his brother, Miller was rope soloing the 2,400-foot Sea of Dreams route when he may have slipped off the end of his rope.
Park officials said rangers “responded immediately.” His death marks Yosemite’s third fatal climbing accident this summer, highlighting the dangers of one of the world’s toughest ascents.
