Tragedy at Green Valley Zoo: Beloved Zookeeper Severely Injured in Panda Attack
On the morning of August 23, 2025, a shocking incident occurred at Oregon’s Green Valley Zoo when experienced zookeeper Michael Torres, 32, was critically injured by a panda he had cared for over the years. Torres was performing his usual morning duties, feeding Bai Yun—a seven-year-old panda known for his gentle and friendly nature—when the animal unexpectedly became aggressive. Surveillance footage shows Bai Yun pacing nervously before lunging at Michael inside the enclosure.
Emergency alarms were triggered immediately, and staff rushed in to intervene. Despite their quick response, Michael sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Zoo officials and veterinarians have launched an investigation into Bai Yun’s sudden behavior change, citing possible stress, illness, or environmental triggers. The panda enclosure has been closed, and Bai Yun is now under close observation.
This incident has left the zoo community stunned and sparked renewed discussions on zookeeper safety and animal welfare. Michael, described as compassionate and deeply dedicated, is being supported by colleagues and animal lovers around the world. Green Valley Zoo has promised transparency as investigations continue and remains focused on Michael’s recovery and staff safety.
