“Hello, Friends. I’m sure by now you’ve heard the very sad news that I lost my sweetheart last night, so I know you understand that I’ll be stepping away from this page for a while to take care of myself and the many people who took care of Phil, and held him close to their hearts,” the actress began.

Before taking a break to grieve, Thomas expressed her immense gratitude for the outpouring of “beautiful messages of love and support” she has received from so many.

The “That Girl” star also thanked her and Donahue’s supporters for allowing them to share their incredible journey together over the years. She reflected on how her late husband, known for his deep connection with his audience, cherished being part of the community where they lived.

“I know he would be very touched by the heartwarming thoughts and memories you’ve been sharing,” Thomas wrote. She concluded her message by wishing health and happiness to everyone, encouraging them to treasure their loved ones as she did with Phil.

“I hope that you will continue to hold close those you cherish most, just as I was blessed to do with my beloved Phillip. Love, Marlo,” she added.

At the end of her post, Thomas shared a fond memory, describing the photo of the two of them enjoying a scooter ride together during a vacation as one of her favorites.

Marlo Thomas’ poignant message comes after it was announced that Phil Donahue passed away at the age of 88 on Sunday night, August 18. Thomas and the rest of Donahue’s family confirmed his passing in a statement shared with “Today”—a show he frequently appeared on during the ’80s.

The legendary TV talk show host’s family revealed that he died after a long illness. His loved ones, including his wife, children, grandchildren, and sister, have not provided further details, only sharing that he passed away surrounded by family and his cherished golden retriever.

“Today” hosts Craig Melvin and Sheinelle Jones announced the tragic news during a segment on Monday morning, August 19. In addition to his family, Donahue leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having started his career in radio in 1959 before moving to television.

Donahue was a pioneer in the modern format of issue-based daytime talk shows, being among the first to include audience participation. “The Phil Donahue Show” achieved tremendous success, becoming one of the most influential TV programs of its time.

In 2002, Donahue made a brief return to television with an MSNBC show, also called “Donahue,” though it was canceled shortly after its debut. In May 2024, Donahue received the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden, an honor given to those who have made significant contributions to the United States or the world.

In lieu of flowers, Donahue’s family has requested donations be made to the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in honor of his lasting impact and legacy.

During the announcement, Jones reflected, “You know, we sometimes overuse the word trailblazer, but he certainly was, indeed.”

Rest in peace, Phil Donahue. In this time of immense grief, we extend our prayers for healing to his family and loved ones as they mourn the loss of such a remarkable figure.
