No child should ever lose their life on the way to school.
Tragically, it happens far too often, and today we must share the heartbreaking story of another senseless accident with fatal consequences.
8-year-old Serenity Campos’s life was cut short in a devastating and perhaps preventable tragedy.
Withheld her name
On January 24, 2025, police and emergency medical services responded to a tragic accident at Gateway Elementary School, located about 50 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas.
The accident occurred in the school’s drop-off line, according to a statement from the Borger Police Department. School staff and first responders did everything they could to save the little girl, but heartbreakingly, she didn’t survive her injuries.
Initially, authorities withheld her name and any details about the incident, stating it was “out of respect for the family.” Later, police identified the victim as 8-year-old Serenity Campos, a young girl remembered for her “huge heart and a contagious smile.”
But what exactly had happened? While the scene was understandably chaotic afterward, police quickly pieced together a clear understanding of the incident.
The police statement explained that Serenity’s jacket became caught in the door of the vehicle as she was exiting, leading to the fatal incident. “Despite the presence of a senior school administrator who immediately attempted to intervene, the incident happened so quickly that it could not be stopped,” the statement said.
“As the vehicle began to pull away, the motion caused Serenity to fall and be struck by the vehicle. Despite immediate emergency medical intervention performed on the scene, on the way to and at the hospital, Serenity did not survive,” a public information officer told People.
A heartbreaking accident
Authorities have not shared any information about the driver involved, but it’s being described as a heartbreaking accident. The tragedy has left a lasting impact on the community, and now, people are coming together to honor Serenity’s memory.
A heartfelt memorial now stands outside Gateway Elementary School, overflowing with teddy bears that “reflect the joy and innocence [Serenity] brought to those around her.” In a touching gesture, Walmart donated the teddy bears so students could leave them in her honor, according to a post from the Borger Police. To help the grieving community, counselors and support dogs have also been brought to the school, offering much-needed comfort during this difficult time.
Serenity is survived by her parents, Daniel and Daniela Campos; her sisters, Braylee and Haisley; and her brother, Asher.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up to support the family with funeral expenses and daily needs. “Daniela and Daniel Campos, her loving parents, are now faced with the unimaginable grief of losing their daughter while also caring for their three other children,” the page reads.
According to her obituary, “She was a caring and protective big sister and friend, or ‘little mom,’ who hated to see anybody crying or sad,” her obituary adds. “Serenity was a friend to everyone, and claimed many people as ‘cousins,’ even if they weren’t actually related to her. She knew no stranger, and wanted to always be around her friends. Serenity had a contagious smile – and she was ALWAYS smiling!” loved ones said of the “passionate” little girl who “was planning to have her own YouTube channel.”
I hope this serves as a wake-up call to all parents—there’s no need to rush, especially when it comes to our kids. Take your time, and always make sure their safety comes first. Rest in peace, beautiful angel. You’ll be deeply missed.
