Drew Carey still not dating 5 years after fiancée’s brutal murder

Drew Carey’s life has been marked by laughter and success, but behind his charismatic TV persona lies a history filled with pain and personal struggles. The tragic murder of his former fiancée, Amie Harwick, is a wound that continues to shape his life, casting a dark shadow over his journey.

His childhood was far from easy. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, he faced deep trauma from a young age. At just eight years old, he lost his father to a sudden heart attack. The loss left a lasting impact, manifesting in anxiety and compulsive behaviors. He recalled how, after his father’s death, he developed the habit of biting his nails and cuticles until his fingers bled. The physical pain was nothing compared to the emotional scars left by losing a parent so young.

School wasn’t much of a refuge either. Drew struggled academically and was expelled twice for poor performance. Raised by his mother, who worked two jobs to keep the family afloat, he and his two older brothers learned early on how difficult life could be.

The pain of his childhood deepened in adolescence. Drew faced battles with depression, which led to two suicide attempts—one at 18 and another in his twenties. He admitted to taking a bottle of sleeping pills, hoping to escape his suffering. It was his fraternity brothers who found him in time and rushed him to the hospital. Amid the chaos, his friend Paul made a darkly humorous remark, singing the jingle of the very pills he had taken. That unexpected moment of humor was a defining one for Drew, reinforcing his belief that laughter could be a lifeline, even in the darkest moments.

He later found structure and purpose when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1980. Serving as a field radio operator for six years, he adopted his signature crew-cut hairstyle and gained discipline that would later shape his career. But even after the military, his struggles with self-worth continued. Reading self-help books, especially those by Wayne Dyer, helped him challenge his deeply ingrained guilt and learn to move forward. Instead of apologizing for simply existing, he began embracing life with a renewed perspective.

By 2007, Drew had become a household name as the host of The Price Is Right. His career was thriving, and he had successfully lost weight, focusing on his health and well-being. It seemed as though he had finally found stability. But then, in 2020, a devastating tragedy upended his world.

Drew’s relationship with Dr. Amie Harwick had been a whirlwind romance. They announced their engagement in early 2018, having spent six wonderful months together before deciding to marry. Amie was a brilliant and accomplished woman—a licensed marriage and family therapist, a passionate advocate for women, and a well-respected author. Her career in psychology was dedicated to helping people through trauma, and she had a reputation for her deep empathy and warmth.

Their engagement, however, was short-lived. Just months later, in November 2018, Drew and Amie ended their relationship. Despite parting ways, they continued to share a deep love and respect for one another. Drew spoke openly about how, even after their breakup, they remained emotionally connected. He recalled how they would dance to music in their kitchen or hold hands in the car, completely in tune with each other’s souls.

That’s why the news of Amie’s murder in 2020 was a devastating shock. In the early hours of February 15, Amie’s roommate was woken by a chilling, bloodcurdling scream. The horror that followed was unimaginable. She had been attacked in her own home and had suffered fatal injuries after falling from her third-story balcony. The culprit was her ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, a man from her past with a history of obsessive and violent behavior.

The aftermath of Amie’s murder revealed disturbing details. She had previously sought restraining orders against Pursehouse, fearing for her safety. Despite her efforts to protect herself, the system had failed her. When police apprehended Pursehouse, he bore clear signs of a struggle—a black eye and a bite mark, proof that Amie had fought desperately for her life. She had faced a much larger and stronger attacker, but she had refused to go down without a fight.

The tragedy was made even more heartbreaking when Drew later revealed that Amie had reached out to him just days before her death. She had sent him a message about forgiveness, wanting to reconnect. He had told her he loved her and had planned to see her the following week. But that meeting would never happen. The senseless brutality of her murder left him shattered, with no closure, only deep sorrow.

Two years after her passing, Drew spoke candidly in an interview about the lingering pain of Amie’s death. He admitted that he could no longer look at Valentine’s Day the same way—it had become a reminder of loss rather than love. He described how her memory still shaped his thoughts on relationships and intimacy, and how her absence was something he carried every single day.

Through it all, he found solace in the people who had loved Amie just as deeply. Her closest friends reached out to him after her funeral, sharing stories of how much she had cherished their time together. They had since become some of his closest companions, a bond formed through mutual grief and love for Amie. He also reconnected with her family, offering each other support through the pain of the trial that ultimately saw Pursehouse convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Drew Carey has faced unimaginable struggles, but he has never shied away from speaking his truth. His story is one of resilience, of finding strength in humor, and of honoring the people who leave a lasting imprint on our hearts.

Even in loss, he continues to inspire others, reminding them that grief and love are often intertwined. Through his voice, Amie’s legacy endures, and her spirit continues to touch lives.

Rest in peace, Amie. And Drew, may you always find light, even in the darkest moments.
