Airplane with 242 on board crashed into medical college hostel – over 100 people have lost their lives

Authorities now confirm that the aircraft, carrying 242 people, slammed directly into a medical college dormitory.

11 children onboard
Air India Flight AI171, en route from Ahmedabad, India, to London Gatwick, crashed just moments after takeoff. After taking off from Ahmedabad Airport, the plane crashed into a residential neighborhood called Meghani Nagar. Officials confirmed the aircraft struck a medical college dormitory.

The airline reported that 242 people were on board, including passengers and crew. Air India stated that among them were 169 Indian citizens, 53 British, 1 Canadian, and 7 Portuguese nationals. Reuters reported that the flight carried 217 adults and 11 children onboard.

Over 100 dead
Emergency crews are on site, racing to save as many lives as possible. Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports that the Ahmedabad police commissioner stated there “seems to be no survivors” from the Air India crash.

Authorities have confirmed that over 100 people lost their lives when an Air India flight carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed just minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad, one of India’s worst aviation tragedies, according to The Guardian.

More than 100 bodies, many severely burned, were taken to the local government hospital for autopsy, officials said.

A senior police officer told reporters, “The building on which it has crashed is a doctors’ hostel … we have cleared almost 70% to 80% of the area and will clear the rest soon.”

All flights have been halted
Photos and videos from the scene showed debris from the plane scattered around the building, with the aircraft’s tail lodged atop the structure.

A fire broke out after the plane went down, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky near the airport. As a result, all flights have been temporarily halted.

The statement read: ”Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport. We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation.”

Meanwhile, video clips have started circulating showing the plane rapidly descending just before a huge explosion. The cause of the crash remains unclear, but authorities are working hard to determine exactly what went wrong.

Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating tragedy. We send our deepest prayers for strength, healing, and comfort during this incredibly difficult time. May those lost rest in peace.
