Lexi Reed’s Inspiring Transformation: From Battling a Rare Disease at 485 Pounds to Rocking a Swimsuit with Confidence

Once unable to walk even a quarter mile, Lexi Reed has undergone an extraordinary transformation. She reclaimed her health, overcame a rare and terrifying disease, and now openly shares her journey to inspire self-love, resilience, and recovery.

At just 24 years old, Reed weighed 485 pounds. Walking even a short distance was excruciating. Stairs felt impossible, and everyday experiences.

Riding roller coasters, using airplane seats, or going canoeing—were often unsafe or unfeasible due to her size.

Before her recovery, Reed struggled emotionally as well as physically. Watching friends and family enjoy activities she couldn’t join left her feeling trapped. “I felt like a prisoner in my own body,” she recalls, yearning for freedom she couldn’t yet access.

In 2016, a single New Year’s resolution marked the start of her reluctant fitness journey. She and her husband committed to avoiding fast food, soda, alcohol, and cheat meals for one month, aiming to break habits that had controlled their lives.

Her diet shifted gradually rather than drastically. Reed replaced greasy fast food with lettuce-wrapped tacos, swapped traditional pizza for cauliflower crust, and chose sweet potatoes over fries.

These changes allowed her to enjoy meals without feeling deprived or restricted.

Meal planning became a cornerstone of her success. By focusing on high-protein, low-carb meals, she learned balance was possible.

She even allowed one treat meal per week, often enjoying Chinese takeout, which prevented burnout and supported long-term progress.

Exercise initially felt painful and embarrassing. Joint pain made every movement a challenge. Starting with just thirty minutes on the elliptical, Reed’s stamina improved week by week. Each step forward was a milestone in both body and spirit.

As her endurance grew, she could walk longer distances, climb stairs more easily, and fit comfortably into spaces previously inaccessible. The gym transformed from a place of punishment into a source of empowerment, providing a structured outlet for stress and personal growth.

Over time, Reed’s routine evolved to include cardio, strength training, walking, biking, Zumba, running, and even canoeing. She found variety kept her motivated and helped her body recover from years of inactivity and physical limitations.

Alongside her physical transformation, Reed built a supportive community. She documented her journey on Instagram, connected with others pursuing similar goals, and eventually led group challenges that encouraged accountability, engagement, and shared motivation.

Her health journey took a sudden, life-threatening turn in early 2022. Reed became severely ill, unable to keep food down. Her husband intervened, bringing her to the hospital where she was admitted to the ICU, placed in a medically induced coma, and put on a ventilator.

Doctors revealed that her organs were failing and warned that delayed care could have been fatal. Reed’s diagnosis was calciphylaxis, a rare condition involving calcium buildup in small blood vessels, causing severe skin damage and posing serious risk to life if untreated.

The disease was particularly rare in someone outside typical high-risk groups. Reed faced more than thirty open wounds across her body, dialysis treatment, immobility, and months of painful recovery. Her struggle now centered on survival rather than weight loss.

For months, Reed’s priorities shifted dramatically. She focused entirely on regaining strength and stabilizing her health. Swimming, once a distant dream, was impossible, and even small movements required careful planning, patience, and medical guidance.

Physical therapy became an essential part of her rehabilitation. Gradually, she regained mobility and endurance. Each day, she celebrated minor victories: standing longer, walking further, and reclaiming basic physical independence previously thought lost.

Scars and lasting physical reminders became a part of her story. Rather than hiding them, Reed embraced her body as a testament to resilience. Her post titled “Scars, Skin, Self Love & Swimsuits” reflected not only physical recovery but emotional courage and self-acceptance.
