Tuesday night’s episode of Wheel of Fortune featured a heartbreaking moment, with a player getting incredibly close to a massive cash prize, only to see it vanish at the very last second.
Coming off a previous win, returning champ Raul Lopez walked into the April 7 broadcast carrying strong momentum and $18,109 from the night prior. Hailing from College Station, Texas, he aimed to keep his victory streak alive, though he was up against fierce challengers: Ben Johnson from Colorado Springs and Karen Stevenson from Joliet.
In the early stages of the game, Johnson—a pastor who loves to swing dance with his wife—secured the initial toss-up puzzle. Lopez fired back by getting the subsequent one, ensuring the score remained close. Stevenson subsequently hit her stride, accurately solving a puzzle under the “You Can’t Beat The Price!” banner, which netted her $1,350 plus a highly coveted Wild Card.
However, fortunes can pivot rapidly on that famous spinning wheel. Stevenson lost her Wild Card after hitting Bankrupt during the next round. At the same time, Johnson landed on the Mystery wedge—holding a possible $10,000 bonus—but failed to convert it into a win. Stevenson then reclaimed her lead by figuring out a crossword-themed puzzle in the “American ___” category, winning a vacation package that substantially increased her overall earnings.

Lopez was presented with an opportunity to take back the lead but faltered by guessing a letter that had already been called, forfeiting his turn. Stevenson capitalized on the error, swiftly deciphering “See You Later, Alligator” and packing a Mexican getaway into her expanding prize pool.
Moving forward, the trio of competitors all contributed during the Triple Toss-Ups, with everyone walking away with extra money. Ultimately, though, it was Stevenson who locked in the win by deciphering the last puzzle, “High School Gym Teacher.” This pushed her final tally to $33,934 and secured her spot in the Bonus Round.
Johnson ended his night with $3,000, and Lopez departed with $4,000 for the episode, wrapping up his two-day run with an impressive grand total of $22,109.

Entering the Bonus Round, Stevenson opted for the “Person” category and was supported on stage by her sister, with whom she shares caretaking duties for their 109-year-old grandmother. Once the standard R, S, T, L, N, and E were revealed, she picked M, P, D, and A to fill in the blanks.
The board unveiled a tricky sequence: “A _ _MAN D NAM.”
With time running out, Stevenson offered the guess “A Woman Dynamite,” which was unfortunately incorrect. The actual solution—“A Human Dynamo”—was displayed shortly after, eliciting a loud sigh of disappointment from her.
The defeat stung even more when the prize envelope was opened to reveal a missed $55,000 windfall. Had she won, her cumulative earnings would have skyrocketed to a massive $88,934.
Viewers watching from home were quick to share their thoughts. A large number flocked to social media platforms, arguing that the puzzle was fairly obvious and sharing their shock that she didn’t solve it in time. Several users confessed that they were screaming the right words at their televisions as the timer wound down.
Even with the narrow defeat, Stevenson is slated to return for another attempt, aiming to transform this heartbreak into a triumphant comeback in her next appearance.
