In an emotional tribute on the Gary Sinise Foundation website, beloved “CSI” star Gary Sinise divulged information about the heartrending loss of his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise. McCanna passed away at the tender age of 33 on January 5 after a valiant battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Chordoma.

McCanna’s journey was one marked by courage, talent, and an unwavering spirit. From a young age, he discovered his passion for music and became an extraordinary drummer by the age of nine. His musical talents garnered him a spot at the prestigious USC music school, which set the stage for a promising career in composition and performance.

Despite having faced significant health challenges in recent years, McCanna continued to inspire those around him with his dedication to music and his ability to find joy and purpose, even in the face of adversity. Tragically, in August 2018, the Sinise family’s world was turned upside down when McCanna was diagnosed with Chordoma.

Although the late musician underwent surgery in September 2018 to remove the initial tumor, and another spine procedure in February 2019, his cancer returned and continued to spread. This marked the beginning of a grueling and 5 ½ battle ahead.

However, throughout this period, McCanna’s resilience and determination shone brightly. He continued to visit the office of his father’s foundation. However, he underwent a third spine operation in November of the same year.

Despite all he was going through, McCanna still managed to continue sharing his musical talents on YouTube, touching the lives of many with his compositions and performances.

More than just being an inspiration to others, music served as a lifeline for McCanna. In December 2023, his dad conducted an interview with Fox News and shared how the creative medium “rejuvenated” McCanna’s spirit and allowed him to rediscover a part of himself that he thought was lost.

The network also showcased touching footage of the composer in a wheelchair, engaging in music production and watching an orchestra perform a piece he co-wrote.

Reflecting on this, the interviewer, Raymond Arroyo, remarked, “Despite the physical difficulties, Mac stayed on mission, doing what he had been called to do.” In response, Gary added, “That’s what’s so inspirational about it, uh, is that seeing him come alive again and rediscover something that he thought was kind of a part of his past.”

On December 30, a day after the interview with Raymond, Gary and his family rushed McCanna to the emergency room for what would become his final hospital visit. The late artist was having difficulty breathing, although medical personnel managed to stabilize him.

For the first couple of days after he was admitted, McCanna was filled with joy and happily shared his music with hospital staff. However, things took a dark turn. Surrounded by his family in early January, McCanna’s long fight with Chordoma came to an end.

In his tribute, Gary reflected on the precious time he and his family had with McCanna and emphasized the incredible strength and inspiration the young talent provided to his family and friends.

“We were blessed to have you in our lives as son, brother, and friend…and we will miss you and love you for eternity,” Gary expressed. He went further to assert, “While our hearts ache at missing him, we are comforted in knowing that Mac is no longer struggling.”

Gary Sinise’s heartfelt dedication to his son underscores how loved he was by his family and friends and highlights the profound legacy McCanna leaves behind.
