My DIL Accepted That I Live With Them, but Only If I Follow Her Strict Orders

A mother’s love for her children is limitless, and she hopes they will reciprocate. Roberta’s son did not want his mother to remain alone following his father’s death, so he invited her to live with him, his wife, and their children.

Roberta was overjoyed, but she was astonished by the rules her daughter-in-law had set for her. She told us her story.

When my son got married, we gave him our big house. Now that my husband has passed away and I am alone, he suggested I move in with them to be with my grandkids. My daughter-in-law agreed but stated, “There are three things you need to be aware of if you want to live with us.”

She then proceeded to outline her rules: “First,” she began, her tone measured but firm, “we have designated quiet time in the evenings from 8 p.m. onwards.

This is crucial for the kids’ bedtime routine and our own relaxation. No TV, no entering the kitchen and no loud noises or disturbances during this time.”

I nodded, understanding the importance of routines for young children, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this rule than met the eye.

“Second,” she continued, her gaze unwavering, “We’re a vegan household. That means no animal products of any kind in the house. If you can’t abide by that, we’ll need to find another arrangement.”

“And finally,” she declared, “since I work full-time, I need help around the house, especially when it comes to cooking. I often don’t have time to prepare the meals, and I ask you to make vegan dishes every evening.”

She then handed me a book of vegan recipes for me to learn to cook.

Even though I love my grandkids, this seemed too strict and even insulting. It seems like I’m being hired as a maid in my own son’s house and asked to work there in exchange for a place to stay.
