I married a dying stranger because he didn’t want to spend his final days alone.

For seven days, I was his wife. After Thomas died, his attorney gave me an old green backpack.

“Thomas wanted you to know the truth,” he said.

Inside were envelopes labeled Bus Stop, Grocery Store, Airport, and Hospital Chapel. Each contained notes about ordinary people and small moments.

Then I opened one from the Waiting Room. Inside was a hospital sticker with the words: “She said her mother laughed like she was trying not to.”

Those were the exact words I had once told Thomas about my mother.

I had met Thomas while volunteering at the hospital. He was seriously ill but always noticed people others overlooked. One day, he asked me to marry him.

“I know we barely know each other,” he said, “but I know enough. You’re the kind of person who stays.”

After his death, I learned Thomas had spent years helping grieving families and recording meaningful moments. His final envelope contained a simple list of things to do.

I followed it and laughed when the ducks ignored me.
